Los Angeles (AP) — Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach makes his directorial debut in the hope of telling a detailed story about a famous New Orleans-based musician.
RadicalMedia announced a partnership with Auerbach on Monday to produce a documentary film about the late singer-piano player Dr. John. The project tells a story about Dr. John’s complex life and his musical and cultural influence.
Known as a funky New Orleans “night tripper” musician, Dr. John blended several musical styles with a hoodoo-blown stage persona and a gravel bayou droll. He was a six-time Grammy winner and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a white man who found a home among Black New Orleans musicians. He died of a heart attack in 2019.
Auerbach said he was honored to be able to create a project focused on Dr. John, whom he called his friend. He said Dr. John (whose real name is Mac Levenac) is “a brilliant example of a crucible of American music.”
“From his mysterious voodoo stage persona, Dr. John, to his genuine humble self McDonald’s, street poet, family man, addict, Grammy award winner, and everything in between, this documentary Introduces him to the world, the way they have never met him before, “Auerbach said in a statement. “I’m still learning a little bit I didn’t know about him, and I hope the film provides a lens to Dr. John’s life story.”
