According to the latest University of Texas / Texas Tribune Paul, pandemics and borders are at the top of the list of Texas voters’ concerns about the problems facing the country, with 16% pointing out the coronavirus and 16% immigrants and borders. This is a significant change from the last poll and reflects both the border crisis and the continued improvement of major pandemic measurements and the increase in vaccination numbers. In the February UT / TT poll, coronavirus (24%), corruption / leadership (16%), and the economy (8%) led the list of problems facing the country. Immigration and border security were cited as the biggest concern at 7%.

Partisans have a distinctly different view. Coronavirus is the number one concern of 30% of Democrats, but 31% of Republican voters cite immigration and border security as the most important issues facing the country.

The same change is evident in the choice of voters for the major issues facing the state. Border security and immigration remain the biggest issues, followed by coronavirus (12%) and political corruption / leadership (11%), according to 37% of Texas voters. In a February poll, border security and immigration totals were the number one concern for 25% of voters, with coronavirus at 19%.

Sixty-five percent of Republican voters chose either immigration or border security as their primary concern. Of the Democrats, 24% chose the coronavirus and 22% chose political corruption / leadership. Only 3% of Republicans said the pandemic was the most important issue facing Texas. 6% of Democrats pointed out immigration and border security.
