Kerrville, Texas (AP) —A driver loses control, crashes into a crowd of spectators, kills two children and injures eight at an airport runway drag racing event. Authorities said.
Police said in a news release that a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy were killed in a crash on Saturday afternoon at an event called “Airport Race Wars 2” at Kerrville-Kerr County Airport. Thousands of people participated in the event, and drivers speeded down the runway while competing for cash.
“The driver lost control, left the runway, collided with a parked vehicle and struck the spectators watching the race,” Carville police said.
The injured victims were taken to various hospitals, including a 46-year-old woman listed in danger. According to officials, the condition of the 26-year-old man was unknown, but most of the other injured were not considered life-threatening. A 4-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl were taken to the hospital for prophylactic evaluation.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of the two children killed in an event about 60 miles (97 km) northwest of San Antonio.
The Carville Convention and Visitors Bureau website advertised the event as an “action-packed family day” where fans can see “the fastest drag cars competing for a total of over $ 8,000 in prize money.”
