(Reuters) – Feliciano Lopez didn’t expect to play in Spain at the age of 40, but veterans said they enjoyed the opportunity after defeating Ecuador’s Roberto Quiroz in the Davis Cup final on Friday.

Lopez recorded his seventh singles victory in the Davis Cup final after defeating Quiros 6-3 6-3. The Spaniards hit 13 aces and saved all five breakpoints they faced to win in front of Madrid’s vibrant home crowd.

Lopez wasn’t expected to play in a singles event, but was given a chance after Rafael Nadal was eliminated due to a leg injury.

Lopez told reporters on Friday. ..

“Because I know how difficult it is to join this team because there are so many great players over the last 20 years, joining the team has always been one of my goals.

“Honestly, this is something I didn’t expect, so it’s a gift to come back here and play more singles.”

Defending champion Spain, who won 3-0 in Thailand against Ecuador, will face Russia in a Group A match on Sunday.
