Madrid (Reuters) – Kazakhstan veteran Mikhail Kukushkin claimed to have won a spectacular victory over Serbian Mio Milkitzmanovich in Thailand in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in Madrid on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old came back from 2-5 in the decision set, saved four matchpoints, then converted the fifth matchpoint to 7-6 (5) 4-6 7-6 (11). Insisted on victory.

Kecmanovic, who was put into the Davis Cup debut, didn’t do much bad, but he couldn’t get rid of his opponents in a series of diversions for 3 hours and 18 minutes.

Kazakhstan won one semi-final for the first time and lost five times in the quarter-finals, but the overwhelming presence of Novak Djokovic, the world’s number one, is a hindrance.

Having won the last 16 Davis Cup singles rubber, Djokovic must defeat the unpredictable Alexander Bublik in order to keep Serbia alive and draw a draw to the doubles deciding factor.

Serbian captain Viktor Troicki has chosen to play against world number 69 Kemanovich ahead of his experienced choices and seems to have been rewarded for having a 22-year-old player on that mission.

Kukushkin is currently in 182nd place, but after finishing in the Top 40, he started slowly because he dropped the opening service game, but he took the first set with a tiebreaker and broke in the second set to lead 4-2. The experience of doing so was shown.

However, Kekumanovich found another level and won seven games in a row to take the second set and advance 3-0 with the decider before Kukushkin digs into it.

Kukushkin saved five breakpoints so he wouldn’t fall 4-0. Paying attention to the wind, Kemanovich served 5-3, saving 3 match points.

Kekumanovich first reached the match point with a nerve-shattering tiebreaker, but burned his forehand long at 6-5.

The Serbs showed great resilience to stop the four match points, but Kukushkin stole the breaker 13-11 and finally finished his job.
