Sydney (Reuters) – Former world number one Andy Murray’s quest for the first ATP title in more than two years was defeated by top-seeded Aslan Karatzev at the Sydney Tennis Classic on Saturday, with Russians 6-36. -3 wins.

Murray, who played in the first final since the European Open in Antwerp in October 2019, started tentatively and was the first in the match as Karatsev took an early lead after a few solid holds. It was broken in the game.

Murray, a three-time major winner, struggled to serve the entire opening set, landing only 48% of his first serve and committing four double faults.

The second set started much like the first set. 28-year-old Karatsev broke early to gain an advantage and constantly hurt Murray with a powerful barrage of winners from behind the court.

Murray gave a glimpse of his old self in the fifth game, where the Britons fought bravely and lasted nearly 13 minutes to regain a break, but Karatsev survived the storm and finally in 1 hour and 32 minutes. The title that won the third career in the game.

“I would like to thank all the help of my team this week. I have had a long way to get here for the first time in three years back in the final, but I thank you for your help.

Previously, Spain’s world number nine Paula Badosa won the women’s title by defeating French Open champion Barbora Krejčkova 6-3 4-6 7-6 (4).
