Uwalde, Texas – Eliana Garcia liked the Disney movie “Encanto” and the costume designers in the studio sent her parents a dress and other memories to help them remember the 9-year-old after her funeral.
The family held a funeral Monday for Eliahna, also known as Eli, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uwalde, two days after her 10th birthday. She was among 19 Rob Elementary School students killed in a mass shooting, along with two teachers.
Her family was preparing a big birthday party at her grandmother’s house. Eliana was hoping for Encanto gifts.
“She loved this film and talked a lot about it,” Aunt Syria Arizmendi told the Associated Press.
Broadcasters in the San Antonio area have reported that Disney has sent a dress resembling the one worn by Isabella, Encanto’s older sister, whose special power makes flowers grow. The dress is lilac and decorated with flowers.
Her aunt, a fifth-grade teacher at Flores Elementary School in Uwalde, said Eliana loved to dance and play sports. Her family described her on a GoFundMe page as a sweet girl “with a beautiful and beautiful soul.”
Eliana was already training choreography with her older sister for a quinceañera party, although there were still five years to go.
“She was shy, but she changed in front of the camera,” her aunt said.
