Bedford police say when they tried to stop the car, the driver stopped and started shooting at the officer. A nearby person was shot.
DALLAS – The Bedford and Dallas police departments have released information regarding a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday morning.
The Bedford Police Department says officers spotted the suspect speeding on Highway 183 shortly before 2 a.m. They believed the driver was intoxicated and tried to stop him, but he fired shots at officers during the chase, they said.
Both agencies say the vehicle stopped on North Stemmons Freeway in Dallas before the driver got out of the vehicle and opened fire on officers again. According to Bedford PD, the bullets hit bystanders as well as police cars and other vehicles nearby.
According to Dallas PD, the passenger in the suspect’s vehicle got out and surrendered.
The Bedford department says their officers returned fire and shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Dallas police, the person at the scene was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. Both departments confirmed that no officers were injured.
The suspect has not been identified.
Dallas police said they were called to the scene at 1:21 a.m. to assist, but they were not involved in the pursuit or shooting.
Dallas police and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the incident.
