Los Angeles (Reuters)-Netflix Inc has added acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg to its roster, and on Monday co-announced a deal with his Ambrin Partners production company to offer multiple films a year over the years. ..
Directors of Oscar-winning big-screen classics such as Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan will continue to direct Comcast Corp’s Universal Pictures films under a separate contract.
The deal adds top Hollywood filmmakers to the list of talents working on Netflix.
Spielberg has been at odds with streaming services in recent years when he argued that movies, mostly seen on television, should be eligible for Emmy Awards rather than Oscars. Netflix publishes some movies privately in theaters.
In a statement, Spielberg said in a statement with Netflix co-CEO Ted Salands, “It’s good enough that we had a great opportunity to tell a new story together and reach our audience in new ways. It was clear. “
Amblin has made several films in addition to the one directed by Spielberg. Recent Amblin projects included the 2018 Best Picture Award-winning Green Book and the 2019 World War I drama 1917. Spielberg could direct some of the Amblin films offered to Netflix.
The financial terms of the Amblin-Netflix deal have not been disclosed.
