Starbucks announced on Wednesday that it would raise US barista wages at least twice in 2022 and raise the wage floor to $ 15 per hour by the summer.

This announcement is made when bars and restaurants are struggling to find enough motivated workers to staff their restaurants as demand recovers. Restaurant Brands International, owner of Domino’s Pizza, McDonald’s, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Popeyes, said it faced labor problems in the third quarter and put pressure on sales in the United States. Industry experts and economists have pointed out many factors that can explain the shortage of workers, including Covid-19 concerns, childcare difficulties, and the shift to high-paying jobs like Amazon warehouses.

Starbucks is also facing a united effort at several Starbucks cafes in Buffalo, New York. Employees are trying to form a union to address issues, including chronic staff shortages.

Starbucks said it will give baristas who have worked in the coffee chain for at least two years a salary increase of up to 5% in late January. Employees with more than 5 years of experience can receive up to 10% salary increase.

The company plans a second salary increase in the summer of 2022, with average wages of up to $ 17 per hour. The current average hourly wage is $ 14 per hour. The new wage floor will be $ 15, but employees in some markets can earn as much as $ 23 per hour.

The coffee chain finally raised workers’ wages in December. At the time, CEO Kevin Johnson said the company would pay $ 15 an hour over the next three years. With the announcement on Wednesday, the milestone will be achieved sooner than planned.

In addition to raising wages, Starbucks said it will offer a $ 200 referral bonus to add recruiters in all US markets. The company is also working on innovations to make the barista’s job easier.
