In a memo sent to employees on Monday, Starbucks said it had decided to close 130 stores and that the brand no longer existed in Russia. Starbucks said it would continue to pay nearly 2,000 Russian workers for six months and help them move to new jobs.

The stores are owned and operated by Kuwait-based franchise operator Alshaya Group.
Starbucks, based in Seattle, suspended all business in Russia on March 8 due to Russia’s intervention in Ukraine.
The coffee giant is the latest American corporation to officially launch business operations in Russia.
On May 26, McDonald’s announced that it had begun the process of selling its Russian business, which includes 850 restaurants with 62,000 employees.

While trying to sell its restaurants, McDonald’s said it plans to start removing gold arches and other symbols and plaques bearing the company’s name. He said he would keep trademarks in Russia.
“We are committed to our global unity and we must remain committed to our values,” said CEO Chris Kempzzinski. “Our commitment to our values means that we will not be able to keep the arches there brighter.”

The first McDonald’s in Russia opened in the middle of Moscow more than 30 years ago, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was a powerful symbol of easing tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.
