SpaceX launched another Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral early Sunday morning. The rocket puts the SiriusXM-8 radio satellite in orbit and relays entertainment programming to receivers in cars, boats, homes and offices.

The previous Maxar satellite in the series, the SXM-7, failed a few weeks after it was launched on another Falcon 9 last December. However, the two older relay stations are still fully functional and SiriusXM will build a replacement for the failed relay station.

The latest mission began at 12:26 EST, with Falcon 9 on Pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station starting nine first-stage engines and roaring a 229-foot-high rocket. In the second stage, two engine ignitions were performed to reach the planned elliptical orbit, and the SXM-8 satellite flew on its own 32 minutes after takeoff. The satellite will use its own propulsion system over the next few weeks to reach the required circular orbit of 22,300 miles above the equator.

The 15,400-pound SXM-8 spacecraft features a large dish-shaped mesh antenna designed to relay programming to mobile radio throughout North America. The design life of the satellite is 15 years.

SiriusXM initially decided to replace the two older satellites XM-3 and XM-4 (nicknamed Rhythm and Blues, respectively) with the SXM-7 launched last December and the same SXM-8 launched on Sunday. I was planning.
