Social media users aghast at $3m Beckham wedding as world grapples with war and cost of living

The billionaire family of Brooklyn Beckham’s wife Nicola Peltz has been criticised for spending $3.5million (£2.7m) on the couple’s lavish wedding in Palm Beach, Florida this weekend.

The newlyweds said ‘I do’ on a stage garlanded with flowers and plants in a huge marquee at the Peltz $103m ocean-side family estate, with the bride’s parents – financier Nelson and his wife Claudia – footing the astronomical bill.

However many people took to Twitter to express their opinions on the excessive show of wealth, with a large proportion suggesting the money would have been better spent on helping those in genuine need.

Most cited the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine or the escalating cost of living in the United Kingdom and United States as both countries recover from the the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under fire: The family of Brooklyn Beckham’s wife Nicola Peltz has been criticised for spending $3.5million (£2.7m) on the couple’s lavish wedding in Palm Beach, Florida this weekend

Suggesting David should have donated to help those in need like fellow footballer Marcus Rashford, one person wrote on Twitter: ‘Stupid amounts of money spent on his wedding!! David Beckham should take a lead out of Rashford’s book by helping people who could live a better life.

‘Beckham is from the East End and should know better. Yes it’s his son’s wedding but 3million on it come on!!! That’s a joke.’

Someone else wrote: ‘Imagine a £3M wedding while Ukraine war continues.’

While another person angrily posted: ‘Doesn’t it cross their minds that all that money could save lives in Ukraine. Beyond contempt.’

Wealth: The bride's parents Nelson and Claudia paid as the $494m (£379m) fortune of Brooklyn's parents David and Victoria is dwarfed by the $1.6billion (£1.2bn) wealth of Nicola's

‘@victoriabeckham The opulent display while the nation faces a cost of living crisis is breathtaking,’ shared another person. ‘Have a lovely wedding day. Monetise like crazy.’

While someone else posted: ‘Beckham wedding rubbish, spending that amount of money while people starve, it’s shameful and it should be called out as disgusting.’

‘Something grotesque about this wedding,’ shared another member of the public. ‘Brooklyn has no job. Barely 20 years old. Wasting all this money.’

‘Mmm why David and Posh Beckham are spending $103million dollars when America and the whole world having trouble with money,’ they added. ‘For one his older son’s wedding not UK mmm. They should give that money to save the children in the world.’

Someone else wrote: ‘Brooklyn and Nicola wedding 3million what a joke just to say I do no wonder they signed pre nup could you imagine the cost of party for the divorce.’

Unimpressed: Having heard news of the couple's nuptials, many people took to Twitter to express their opinions, suggesting the money would have been better spent elsewhere

Someone else shared: ‘I honestly truly completely couldn’t give a monkeys do dah that Brooklyn Beckham is getting married. This is news FFS. Disgusting amounts of money being spent for show… vile!’

‘Just read the paper regarding Brooklyn’s wedding,’ wrote another Twitter user. ‘The obscene amount of money spent on the wedding.’

Someone else suggested: ‘Weddings are lovely things but I do feel the 3m dollar cost of the wedding is in poor taste in these times of hardship for many. It would have been a wonderful gesture to have a smaller wedding and donate the money to charity instead.’

While another person posted: ‘Totally agree! What a waste of money on a self-indulgent event! They couldn’t had a small do and asked guests to donate to charity. This really is poor timing with the cost of living crisis etc!’

However, not all social media users were unimpressed by the Beckham and Peltz families, with some saying they should be free to spend their money how they wish.

Others were impressed that they were spending money on local hospitality business after the coronavirus pandemic.

One person posted: ‘Yes, it’s a lot but it’s their money, unlike the £32m of OUR money for Meghan and her second husband’s wedding.’

Another person shared: ‘It’s being paid for by the bride’s family. It’s giving money and employment to caterers, waiters, bartenders, movers, tent rental companies, all the hard hit people in the hospitality industry trying to recover after COVID. The money is being spread around.’

Meanwhile, another person posted: ‘Many small businesses, caterers, florists, printers, music, equipment, clothes, hotels will have generated fantastic revenue after a really hard time.’

‘Who cares how the family spends their money? Think of all the vendors and employees who are benefitting from this,’ shared someone else.

One other person tweeted: ‘Are you suggesting they pretend to be poor and downgrade their wedding so poor people feel ok about it? I don’t particularly care for the Beckhams but I certainly wouldn’t pontificate about what they can can’t spend their money they earned on.’

While someone else wrote: ‘People complaining that Brooklyn Beckham in-laws have spent £3million on their daughter’s wedding. If I had that sort of money they have I’d give my princess the wedding of her dreams.’

‘Fair play to the Beckhams,’ tweeted one person. ‘Anyone who’s followed both their careers know they seem half decent and do enough for others without bragging about it. And even if they didn’t, who gives a toss with what they do with their money?’

Someone else wrote: ‘Idk who he’s marrying/married, but is it their money? Maybe the people are complaining because the in-laws can’t actually afford to spend that much but know the Beckhams will bail them out if it comes to it.’

While another person shared: ‘Well nothing wrong with wealthy people. I think this is Beckham’s son, they earned their money via advertising, good for them as long as they earned it legally and paid their taxes.’

Finally, someone wrote: ‘Freedom. People get the choice to spend their money as they wish.’

Bride Nicola stunned in an incredible Valentino bridal gown and was the epitome of elegance in her all-white long-sleeved dress while clutching a bouquet of white flowers near the chuppah, in which the couple wed in a Jewish ceremony.

Her incredible gown boasted a stunning sweeping veil, which featured delicate lace embellishing, as Nicola was every inch the blushing bride.

The actress flew to Rome twice to work with Valentino designer Pierpaoio Piccioi at his studio to ensure every detail of the outfit was perfect.

Nicola and aspiring chef Brooklyn, 23, were married in an early evening ceremony in one of three massive tented structures constructed on the sprawling ocean front lawn of father Nelson’s $103m (£79m) compound in Palm Beach, Florida.

Guests including tennis legend Serena Williams, TV chef Gordon Ramsay and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria could clearly be seen enjoying cocktails.

The 300 revellers then moved to the banqueting tent – where MailOnline can reveal Brooklyn and Nicola’s first dance to a live singer belting out Only Fools Rush In, made famous by Elvis Presley.

The couple took to the dance floor at 8.10pm and finished to loud cheers from the guests. And the second song was the Ben E. King classic Stand By Me, we can also reveal.

Brooklyn and Nicola’s wedding started at 6pm sharp when Brooklyn, 23, was joined by his 27-year-old bride for the nuptials in one of the massive tented structures set up at the Peltz family estate.

The eldest son of Victoria and David Beckham could be seen waiting on his own on a stage garlanded with flowers and plants for 15 minutes before actress Nicola arrived for the extravaganza.

It appeared there were six groomsmen who joined him on his right and six maids of honour who placed themselves to his left.

The aspiring chef chose brothers Romeo and Cruz, 17, as his best men for his much-publicised marriage to the daughter of billionaire financier Nelson Peltz, 79. His sister Harper, ten, was a bridesmaid.

As exclusively predicted by MailOnline the couple wed under a flower-garlanded chuppah in traditional Jewish ceremony in honour of Nicola’s Jewish heritage.

Brooklyn also has some Jewish heritage through his soccer legend father David, 46, whose maternal grandfather was Jewish.

And in keeping with tradition, Brooklyn smashed a glass wrapped in a napkin under his heel after he and Nicola were married by a rabbi.

The newlyweds then enjoyed a lingering six-second kiss in front of celebrity guests.

The ceremony ended at 6.30pm, although Jewish weddings on a Saturday – the Sabbath – strictly speaking should not be conducted until the sun has gone down. Sundown is at around 8pm in Palm Beach.
