Madrid (Reuters) -Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez will miss next month’s Uruguay World Cup qualifying due to knee problems, the Spanish club said Monday.
Suarez, who scored before taking the place in a 2-2 draw with Villarreal on Sunday, was scheduled to join his national team for a match against Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.
“A player’s MRI scan detected moderate edema in the back of the left knee,” Atletico said in a statement.
“The club’s medical services have notified the Uruguay Federation and players have been excluded from participating in the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.”
Suarez joined Edinson Cavani of Manchester United on the withdrawal list after the Uruguay Federation announced early Monday that the forward call had been cancelled.
The British government has denied a quarantine exemption request by FIFA President Gianni Infantino for players returning from the Red List during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a withdrawal and compromise deal between the club and national associations. rice field.
