(Reuters) – Former Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko has said he will use his platform to tell the world the truth about his country’s Russian invasion and step up efforts to raise humanitarian aid for crisis victims.

Shevchenko, one of Ukraine’s best players and a former national team coach, said he was in shock for the first two days of the invasion, which Moscow described as a “special military operation”.

“But I soon began to think about the best way to help my country. I decided that the best way was to use my platform, talk, tell people the truth about what was happening, and raise humanitarian aid,” Shevchenko told the newspaper. Times.

Shevchenko told the Times that he plans to take in two Ukrainian refugee families at his home in Surrey.

“I have the ability and ability to have people in my house, so why not do that? These are people who have nothing and the world has to help, right now,” the 45-year-old said.

“Everyone’s response has been fantastic, but the situation is getting worse. More people are dying, so we all need to do more, and we have to do it now.”

Thousands were killed in the fighting, while the UN refugee agency says about 10 million people were displaced by the war.

Shevchenko has launched a campaign called “Already Your Role for Ukraine https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/play-your-part” which hopes to raise about two million pounds ($ 2.64 million) to help those affected . Donations were nearly £ 294,000 on Tuesday.

Shevchenko also welcomed the leadership of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

“The president’s reaction was incredible. He united the nation,” Shevchenko said. “His is an inspiring message of solidarity and the global reaction has given hope to our people.”
