Deputies said the father shot and killed three children and a man before turning his gun on him.
SACRAMENTO, California – Five people have been killed in a shooting at a church in the Arden-Arcade area along the Wyda Road.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Rod Grassmann said the death toll was three children under the age of 15. The suspect said Grassman was the father who killed himself. Details of the fifth person are not yet available, but Grassmann said the three children killed were the suspect’s own children.
Grassmann said the shooting took place in the main shrine area of the church. At around 5:07 p.m., a worker who heard gunshots left the area and called 911.
The type of weapon used in the deadly shooting is not yet known, and Grassmann said the sheriff’s office called the shooting a “domestic violence” incident.
Sheriff Scott Jones said the shooter was far from the mother of the children who were being held in custody.
Investigators believe the shooting happened during a controlled visit with the children, and a fourth victim was their patron, Jones said.
The identity of the shooter was not immediately disclosed.
The identities of the victims have not been determined yet.
Authorities did not know if the family members belonged to a church near a shopping center east of Sacramento, mostly in a residential area.
It is not immediately known how many people were in the church at the time of the shooting or whether there were any services or activities.
Governor Gavin Newsom called the move “another senseless act of gun violence.”
