Seven Tips for IT Project + Certification

In the world of project management, the PMP certification developed by the Project Management Institute is undoubtedly the most respected. Not only do you have to pass a very tedious exam, but you also have to show a lot of documentary evidences about your work time in the field to get a certificate.

A few years ago, the Gartner Group stepped into the certification arena and tried to develop a certification similar to the PMP. But candidates only need to pass a separate exam, which means that people who want to change careers into project management can get a certificate even if they have no experience in the field. This certification/exam complex (now IT Project+) was sold to CompTIA two years ago, along with two other certifications, as Gartner moved out of the certification arena to focus on other areas.

Up until now, CompTIA has not changed the name of this certification for two years. But at the end of this year, the old test will be replaced by a new version. In this article, I will focus on the 7 most important tips about the new certification to help you solve the money and prepare for the certification.

Tip 1: There’s More Content of IT Than Ever

Although the original exam was called IT Project+, the focus was on Project management rather than IT. It could be seen as that if you can pass the PMP exam section, you can also pass the IT Project+ exam without needing any more IT knowledge.

In this version, CompTIA began to try to make this certification not the same as PMP. It retains the elements of the project, but incorporates the principles of IT. There are some differences between the concept of information technology project and traditional project in some aspects. I think the difference between this certification and PMP can make it no longer subject to PMP certification.

Tip2: Seen It As A Stepping Stone

CompTIA exam online may wish to differentiate this exam from other project management exams, with more crossover than fragmentation. There is no problem thinking of this as an entry-level project management certification.

In this new version, the strong focus on IT of the exam is great, but the exam still requires candidates to focus on the general principles of project management. You can only have a general knowledge of IT, but if you are not familiar with the structure of labor classifications and the way variance is calculated, this certification — or exam — is not suitable for you.

Tip 3: Project Execution Becomes More Important

There are four subject areas, or fields, as CompTIA calls them, that together make up the exam. In the original version of the exam, the proportion of the questions was assigned as follows:

Scope definition – 27%

Preliminary Planning/Project Planning — 39%

Project execution — 29%

Termination – 5%

In the new test, the distribution looks like this:

IT project implementation and scope definition – 20%

IT project planning — 30%

IT project execution, control and coordination — 43%

IT project termination, acceptance and support — 7%

Not only has “IT project “been added to the front of each area heading, but the scope definition and project planning have been reduced by a large percentage, while the terminations have been increased slightly. Most important, is the significant increase in the proportion of the operative parts.

Tip 4: Improve Your Speed of Answering

According to CompTIA, one of the promotional points of the change is to make the problem more tangible. Many begin with a sentence like “Imagine yourself in such a situation.” It may take you 80 to 90 minutes to read the PMP exam questions, much like the Microsoft exam.

Since you are given less than 68 seconds for each question, the candidate must be able to understand the key points of the question more quickly. The previous “cost variance (CV) is the difference between BCWP and which of the following?” Now it’s something like, “A colleague is preparing a presentation this afternoon and he asks you to explain the concept of cost variance to them. Cost variance (CV) is the difference between BCWP and which of the following?” In other words, you should know the materials and know how to move on quickly.

Tip 5: Find the Correct Study Guide

It is important to do PMP exam prepare. When a test costs $200, a $50 book can be a prudent investment. There are a lot of exam review materials out there, and I’m not going to endorse or denigrate any of them, but instead I’m going to make some general statements:

Look for books for the upgraded version of the exam. The test numbers for this exam are PK0-002 (whereas the original exam was 001). Book publishers may update their titles, so you should know the difference.

Look for materials that cover a lot of questions, so you can better understand the question and know how to answer such questions.

Look for authors who have mastered the exam.

I often see people who don’t want to spend more money on the exam, don’t buy any materials for the test, and as a result, they end up failing their first test. In this way, they wasted four times as much money, not including the break their confidence.

Tip 6: Be Prepared to Include This Exam in Your Other Certifications

Not only is CompTIA actively promoting such certification, but other vendors are starting to take notice. Novell is preparing to make IT Project+ certification a mandatory part of its Master CNE certification, and other vendors are beginning to do the same.

Unlike other certifications that are upgraded with a new version of the operating system, this one is very much alive.

Tip7: Measure the Needs in Your Field

Whenever I evaluate a certification, I always think in terms of measuring the market. What difference would it make if I had a PMP Certification? Is there any other certification that will allow me to get more benefit with less time and less money?

To assess the value of this certification, I suggest you go to a large employment agency (such as Monster.com) and do a search for “project management, “followed by “project+.” Unless you don’t mind relocating to the backcountry for a job, it’s best to include the name of your area in the keyword. You can also do a simple assessment by talking to your HR manager.

Emmett’s advice:

An entry-level project management certification in the online world can be a wonderful investment. If you have project management skills and a desire to work in this field, I  recommend strongly that you consider this certification. There is nothing better for you.
