Trevi Fountain tourist walks across iconic Rome landmark to fill up her bottle with fountain water

A woman was caught walking across Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain to fill up her water bottle in the latest shocking incident of tourists disrespecting Italian monuments. 

In a video circulating on social media, the unidentified woman is seen standing in the middle of the landmark and using the fountain water to fill up her bottle. 

The woman ignored signs posted around the fountain telling tourists not to step in the water and the video ends with a police officer approaching her. 

Video of the July event at the Trevi Fountain comes just weeks after a California man filmed two tourists etching their names into the wall of the Colosseum.

At the Trevi Fountain, the woman – dressed in white khakis and a blue top – walks across the rocks as onlookers watch in astonishment and disbelief. The fountain is one of Rome’s most popular landmarks. 

It was completed in 1762 and draws more than 1,000 people every hour.

The person who filmed the video, Lex Jones, told Storyful she witnessed the astonishing daytime scene and immediately knew she had to record it.    

‘I was just like, wow, this is crazy so I started videoing it,’ Jones said. 

Jones added others around her were just as confused given the strict rules and signage regarding the prohibited action. 

‘There were signs all over saying that’s not allowed,’ Jones continued said. 

The woman is eventually seen walking back from the middle of the fountain where she filled up and exiting, acting as though nothing had ever happened. 

Just before the video cuts out, an Italian police officer is seen walking down the steps toward the woman and eventually making contact. 

Jones said the woman was eventually taken away. 

Before she was escorted from the premises, the woman ‘kept trying to explain her side and didn’t really understand why she was in trouble.’

With an estimated 10.5 million visitors each year, the Trevi Fountain is one the biggest tourist destinations in all of Italy. 

Another one of Rome’s top landmarks was defaced in June when a man was caught making an inscription into the walls of the Colosseum using a set of keys.

The video of Ivan was shared on Reddit with the caption: ‘A******e tourist carves name in Colosseum in Rome’

In that recorded incident, the man can be seen scratching ‘Ivan + Hayley 23’ into one of the bricks before grinning at the camera.

The California man who videotaped the vandalism, Ryan Lutz, 38, told MailOnline: ‘I couldn’t believe it when I saw what this jerk was doing to the brickwork.

‘I’m fascinated by history and culture and here was this dumba** defacing it which is a crime and I wanted to do something about it,’ Lutz said. 

‘I don’t understand what would possess someone to do something like that and I really hope that are caught and punished,’ he added. 

Even that shocking event is just one in a long line of instances involving tourists desecrating Italian landmarks. 

In August 2018, a group of British tourists decided to take a dip in the Trevi Foundation while naked or nearly naked. 

One of two men removed his underwear and both frolicked about in the water and posed for photos while onlookers looked on in confusion and bemusement. 

Two years earlier , three women in bikinis stripped down and jumped in the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola to cool off from the heat in the middle of the summer. 

In pictures taken by a witness, the women were seen frolicking under one of the fountain’s jets and laughing.

Romans said at the time that their antics showed a lack of respect for the 17th-century monument after they were snapped in the act. 

Another recent and shocking incident occurred in June 2022 when an American tourist caused pricey damage to Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps. 

The unidentified woman in her late twenties sped down the stairs on an e-scooter and did some $27,000 in damage. 

Cops eventually caught up with the woman and a male companion who is seen in the footage recklessly wheeling his own scooter down the storied stairs.
