Johannesburg (Reuters) – Africa’s largest telecommunications service provider, MTN Group, announced on Monday that it will enforce compulsory COVID-19 vaccination of its employees starting in January, the company that issues the latest vaccine directives in South Africa.

Many South African companies have opted for compulsory vaccination to ensure a safe working environment, but it has also opened them up to potential legal challenges.

The MTN move follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement last month that the government is considering forcing COVID-19 shots for citizens to access certain locations and activities.

The Business Lobby Group supports this move, but one of them, Business Unity South Africa, does not state that it anticipates legal issues and allows companies to enforce their vaccine obligations. He said he was seeking legal opinion to help.

South Africa’s largest trade union, COSATU, said last month that its position on forced vaccination had “evolved” and supported such an obligation as a means of curbing a pandemic.

In South Africa, coronavirus infections caused by the first new subspecies Omicron detected in the country are on the rise.

This has prompted a widespread need for vaccination in countries and continents, one of the slowest inoculation countries in the world.

“The MTN Group’s new vaccine policy is a measure to meet MTN’s legal obligations to provide a safe workplace,” MTN said in a statement.

“It (vaccine obligation) also recognizes the right of employees to apply for an exemption from policy and / or refuse vaccination for certain well-defined reasons,” said Vaccine. Staff who have no good reason not to receive the vaccine will be dismissed.
