Russian basketball manager, teammate guarantees Griner on Russian court

WNBA player Brittney Griner was back in Russian court on Thursday, a week after she pleaded guilty to drug charges.

Although the meeting was closed to reporters, Griner’s lawyers said that the head of the Russian basketball club she plays for, UMMC Yekaterinburg, guarantees her good character.

Club manager Maxim Ryabkov told the court about “Griner’s outstanding talent as a player and his personal contribution to strengthening the team spirit”.

Team captain Yevgenya Belyakova has also praised Griner at the trial.

Griner has played in Russia during the WNBA season since 2014. She has also won double Olympic gold.

Griner was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in February. Police said they had found cannabis oil in her luggage. Griner said he did not intend to bring the oil with him.

Griner could face up to 10 years in prison and will reportedly return to court on Friday.

Some have speculated that Moscow will eventually try to replace Griner with a Russian citizen imprisoned in the United States. Russian officials have called such speculation “hype”.

Some information in this report came from Reuters and the Associated Press.
