Moscow (Reuters) – Russia accused Ukraine on Wednesday of deploying half or 125,000 troops in Donbas, a conflict zone in eastern Ukraine.

The accusations were leveled by Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing in Moscow. There was no immediate response from Kiev.

Russia said it was concerned about Ukraine’s intentions as tensions between Kiev and Moscow soared over Western fears of a new Russian attack on Ukraine.

Zakharova also commented on Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s offer to act as an intermediary between Russia and Ukraine in Ankara. She said the offer did not refer to the conflict in Donbas between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists.
