The team suggests that this helps move the wearer forward with a little less energy and may explain the popularity of shoes among the elite running community.

“As far as chronometric performance is concerned, that’s a big step forward in our opinion,” said Stephen Vermon, the author of the paper and a sports medicine doctor in the world athletics health sciences department.

“These results confirm that advanced footwear technology benefits elite male and female long-distance runners,” he added.

“Whether this technology is banned or simply controlled (as it is now) has not yet been decided by World Athletics.”

In their study, Dr. Vermon and colleagues analyzed the best times of the season for elite runners in three different race categories (10k, half marathon, marathon) from 2012 to 2019.

The team has found a statistically significant reduction in race time since 2017. This coincided with the launch of Vaporfly 4%.

The team was surprised to discover that among elite athletes, women benefit most from the design of “advanced shoes.” Seasonal best times were shortened in the range of 1.7-2.3%, compared to only 0.6-1.5% for men. ..
