Rookies Morel, Hall are looking to extend their homers

A look at what is happening today in the majors:

BEAUTIFUL NEW

Cubs rookie Christopher Morel has hit a home run in three straight games and is looking to keep the race going when he faces Boston at Wrigley Field.

Morel, 23, hooked up Friday night for a two-run career while Chicago outscored the Red Sox.

Morel got five hits, including a homer, on Thursday in a challenge over Cincinnati. He also hit a homer on Wednesday and made a great throw from midfield to nail a runner to the plate.

Against Boston, he started on second base. And as far as he’s concerned, he’s fine.

“That’s why I work on it every day. Every position,” Morel said. “Wherever they need me, for that I am there, the team. Wherever they need me, I will be there. “

Red Sox rookie Josh Winckowski (3-1, 3.60 effective) is looking to win his fourth straight outing since being retired from Triple-A on June 15th. Alec Mills (0-1, 9.87) throws for Chicago.

EXPOSURE OF POWER

The Phillies rookie Darick Hall takes three hits in his career in the Big League, all of them homers after reconnecting in a win over St. Louis. Louis.

The batting cleanup, Hall, 26, hit a home run to help beat the Cardinals 5-3 on Friday night. He hit two homers on Thursday in a 14-4 win over Atlanta.

Hall is 3 of 13 since being promoted on Wednesday to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he had 20 homers in 72 games this year. He leads 118 homers in six minor league seasons.

DOUBLE

The Cleveland Guardians are ready to play another double game after it rained against the New York Yankees at Progressive Field.

The Friday night wash was going to be offset a day later with a day-night twin. It will be the Guardians ’sixth double game at home this season.

Cleveland also played a double day-night game on Tuesday, and the Guardians are scheduled to play a double game on Monday in Detroit.

Rookie Kirk McCarty (0-1, 10.29 ERA) will start Game 1 for Cleveland against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (6-2, 2.99). McCarty made his Major League debut against New York in April and conceded four runs and four hits in three innings.

Announcement

Aaron Civale (2-4, 7.20), who was initially scheduled to start Friday with Cleveland, will start the second game against New Yorker Nestor Cortés (6-3, 2.51).

RAYS OF RICH

Kevin Kiermaier and Tampa Bay will have a couple of chances to stop their skid when they play a double game in Toronto.

The Rays lost four in a row, equaling their longest drought of the season, and scored a total of nine runs in that span. They were 0 of 7 with the runners in scoring position as they fell 9-2 to the Blue Jays on Friday.

Left-hander Shane McClanahan (8-3, 1.77) will start Game 1 for Tampa Bay and right-hander Drew Rasmussen (5-3, 3.41) is expected to be activated from the injured list to begin the second game.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman (6-6, 2.93) will start Game 1 for Toronto and right-hander Thomas Hatch (4-4, 5.12 in Triple-A Buffalo) is expected to join the roster to begin Game 2.
