Police: Two people killed and eight injured in a shooting at Virginia Beach’s oceanfront | Voice of America

Virginia Beach, Virginia-Police said Saturday that two people were killed and eight were injured in a shooting at Virginia Beach’s oceanfront.

Virginia Beach police said in a news release that eight people were shot dead after 11:00 pm on Friday. All eight were taken to a local hospital, ranging from serious to life-threatening.

A woman died from a gunshot wound on the scene, Release said. At a previous press conference, police chief Paul Neudigate said the death was probably due to an unrelated shooting.

The release also said one officer was slightly injured. Neudigate said police were attacked by the vehicle during the investigation.

Another policeman shot a man deadly at the shooting site. Bullets were fired nearby while officers were investigating the first shot, Neudigate said. The policeman confronted the man and led to a deadly shootout.

Officers who had been with the department for five years and were assigned to the Special Operations Department were on leave.

Initial shootings and police shootings were being investigated at the same time, Release said.

“We are having a very chaotic incident, a very chaotic night,” Neudigate said at a press conference.

Suspicious information was not immediately available. Neudigate said several had been detained by police, but the possibility of involvement in the shooting is still under investigation.

Roads were blocked all night while police were working in the area.
