Mr. DeSantis now trails Mr. Trump by a wide margin.
Rival, 77, holds 49.8% of Republican primary voters, while DeSantis himself has 21%.
The Florida governor, once seen as a rising star, has been plagued by allegations of poor campaign performance and lack of connection with voters.
DeSantis, 44, was asked by a podcast host who he was thinking of for vice president, but said the question was premature.
“Who would you recommend?” he asked.
“I’m taking it one step at a time and I think that will be appreciated over time.
“I think it’s a bit presumptuous to do that at this stage.
“I came here to win the early primaries. That’s the first thing we have to do.”

Asked if he would consider Joe Biden’s Democratic rival RFK for vice president, DeSantis said that he and the notorious anti-vaccine RFK “collaborated on Fauci,” but seriously He said he felt there were too many differences to be political partners.
“I think there are issues we can agree on,” he said.
“But on a lot of issues, I think he’s a liberal Democrat, so I’m going to go with someone conservative.”
