Philip Baker Hall of ‘Seinfeld’, ‘Modern Family’ dies at 90 years old

Hall’s wife said that the beloved character actor was fine until a few weeks earlier and that he spent his last days in a warm mood, reflecting on his life.

NEW YORK – Philip Baker Hall has died, the prolific film and theater actor who starred in Paul Thomas Anderson’s early films and who memorably sought a book from the library in Seinfeld. He was 90 years old.

Holly Wolfle Hall, the actor’s wife for nearly 40 years, said Monday that Hall died Sunday surrounded by loved ones in Glendale, California. She said Hall had been fine until a few weeks earlier, and spent her last days warmly, reflecting on her life.

“His voice in the end was still just as powerful,” Wolfle Hall said.

Born in Toledo, Ohio, Hall had been a well-traveled theater actor and had a small presence in film and television before Paul Thomas Anderson, then little known, sought him out to star in his 1993 short film “Cigarettes & Coffee.” that the short, with Hall playing a traveling player, reached the Sundance Film Festival, Anderson extended it to his 1997 feature film debut, “Hard Eight,” which catapulted Hall’s career. Anderson would choose him again in “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia.”

For many, Hall was instantly recognizable by one of the most intense guest appearances on “Seinfeld.” In episode 22 of the 1991 sitcom, Hall played Lieutenant Joe Bookman, the library investigator who comes after Seinfeld for a copy of “Tropic of Cancer,” years behind schedule. Hall interpreted him as an old-school detective noir, telling Seinfeld, “Well, I have a flash for you, Joy-boy: the party is over.”

Baker has gained greater recognition for his portrayal of the neighboring video game lover in the hit ABC series “Modern Family.”

Other Hall credits included playing Richard Nixon in Robert Altman’s 1984 drama “Secret Honor.” He starred in “The Truman Show”, “The Insider”, “Zodiac”, “Argo” and “Rush Hour”.

Hall is survived by his wife, four daughters, four grandchildren, and his brother.
