Just as you think you’ve seen behind it, the Covid-19 pandemic has a protracted way about the cabin.
So Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief of cruise review site CruiseCritic, wrote on Tuesday that he was excited to embark on the Celebrity Millennium sailing the Caribbean with only fully vaccinated passengers. “After all, 15 months without cruising feels like a lifetime when it’s the form of travel you’re most passionate about,” she writes. “Passengers, crew and everyone on board felt the importance of a significant voyage.”
But on Thursday, two guests on the Millennium were tested positive for Covid-19, Celebrity Cruises RCL. -0.60%
The parent Royal Caribbean Group said in a statement. The company said the passengers were asymptomatic and isolated.
For McDaniel, the celebration turned into a real journalism opportunity. In a follow-up post on Friday, she told Cruise Critique readers what was happening on board after the positive test. Crew members in close contact with the pair were immediately tested and returned to negative. We performed contact tracing using closed circuit footage to determine who else was on board for 15 minutes. The first announcement of the positive test “did not send a wave of panic to the passengers,” she said.
Vaccines are not 100% effective, so we may all have to live for a while at the Covid risk. At the Millennium, no one’s style seems cramped. McDaniel reports that most guests continue to attend the show, pick up drinks and go to the casino frequently.
