From Washington-A US Capitol police officer who fatally shot and killed a woman in an attempt to push her into the House of Representatives in a January 6 attack shot because she believed she threatened the House of Representatives. Said that it was a “last resort.”
“I tried to wait as long as I could,” police lieutenant Michael Bard said in an interview with NBC Nightly News on Thursday in his first public statement since the violence.
“I hoped no one would try to get in through those doors and prayed,” Bird said. “But because they didn’t obey, I had to take appropriate action to save the lives of parliamentarians, myself, and my fellow officers.”
Bird described shooting as a “last resort” act when speaking publicly three days after a review by Parliamentary police. The road from the destroyed window to the lobby of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“It was a very scary situation,” Bird said.
The 35-year-old Ashli Babbitt’s shooting came on the day of violence when he saw hundreds of Trump supporters fighting against the Capitol, attacking police and running lawmakers.
Babbit was a U.S. Air Force veteran who accepted the far-right conspiracy theory on social media, including Trump’s false allegations that his defeat in the 2020 presidential election was the result of fraud. She was one of the four participants in the riot that died on January 6th.
The far-right group accepted Babbitt as a martyr, claiming she had been killed. Her cause was also taken up by Trump. Trump mistakenly claimed last month that the police officer who shot her was the “security chief” of a “high-ranking” Democrat.
Police officers who fought the mob threatened to beat them, curse them with racist insults, and kill them “with their own guns” in a testimony given to Parliamentary Commission last month. He talked about the scene of violence.
A police officer in the Capitol was killed the next day after the riot. The four policemen who participated in the defense of the Capitol later killed themselves. Over 100 police officers were injured.
A Parliamentary police review of the shooting concluded that it may have saved lives.
“The actions of the officers in this case may have saved members and staff from serious injuries and the possibility of death from a large crowd of riots,” the agency said. The policeman’s family was “subject to many credible and specific threats,” he added.
The Justice Department completed an investigation into Babbitt’s death in April, saying there was no evidence that police officers committed criminal activity in the shooting.
The worst violence in the Capitol since the War of 1812 delayed the proof of Democratic Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election by hours and, for months, brought a huge military presence to the city.
