Parents acquire LHP Sean Manaea in exchange for Athletics

PEORIA, Ariz. – The San Diego Padres bolstered their rotation on Sunday, acquiring left-hander Sean Manaea in an exchange with Oakland Athletics.

San Diego beat Manaea, 30, and minor league right-hander Aaron Holiday, from Oakland, for throwing prospect Adrian Martinez and minor league outfielder Euribiel Angeles.

Manaea joins a rotation that includes Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger.

Hours after the change was announced, Manaea made his first outing for the Padres, against the A’s. / 3 tickets.

Still wearing a green glove, Manaea smiled as she faced her former teammates, and visited with them from outside the Oakland hut.

The exchange also reunited Manaea with coach Bob Melvin, who left Atletico after last season and took over from the Padres.

Manaea was 11-10 with an effectiveness of 3.91 in 32 outings last year. He had two bleachers and struck out a total of 194 batters, making him eighth in the American League.

The incorporation of Manaea could lead to another play for San Diego, which was already on the verge of the starting pitch before the exchange with Oakland.

The Athletics are rebuilding after going 86-76 last year, losing the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Right-handed Chris Bassitt, first baseman Matt Olson and third Matt Chapman were traded last month.

Martinez played in the San Antonio Double-A and El Paso Triple-A last year, scoring 8-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 26 games, 22 starters. The right-hander finished with 122 strikeouts in 125 innings.

Martinez, 25, missed the 2016 season after Tommy John surgery and the 2020 season because of the pandemic.

Angeles played for Low-A Lake Elsinore and High-A Fort Wayne last year, hitting .329 with four homers, 64 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 105 games. The 19-year-old right-back was signed by the Dominican Republic Fathers in 2018.

Manaea was selected by Kansas City in the first round of the 2013 amateur draft. He was transferred to Oakland in the July 2015 deal that transferred Ben Zobrist to the Royals.

Manaea has a 50-41 record with an effectiveness of 3.86 and 641 strikeouts in 129 career games, including 128 starters, in six seasons. He accepted a $ 9.75 million one-year contract last month, avoiding arbitration.

Holiday, 21, was selected by Oakland in the 13th round of the 2021 amateur draft. He was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in three relay appearances with the A branch in the Arizona Complex League last year.
