Lori Lightfoot has been ousted as mayor of Chicago. It is the first time in 40 years that an elected mayor of Chicago has failed to win re-election.

On Tuesday, Lightfoot (D-Illinois) failed to become one of the top two vote-getters in Chicago’s mayoral race. She lost to Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson. Vallas is the former CEO of Chicago Public Schools and Johnson is the Cook County Commissioner.

The two men will face off on April 4th.th Run-off vote. For many people, this runoff vote comes as no surprise.

Valas received 35% of the vote and Johnson 20%. Lightfoot put him in third place with 16%.

Democratic incumbents conceded defeat Tuesday night shortly after the results were announced.

“Obviously I didn’t win today’s election, but I’m standing here with my head held high,” she said.

In the weeks leading up to the race, Lightfoot’s popularity plummeted. Under her reign, Chicago reached its highest number of killings in a quarter century.

A Mason-Dixon Polling poll found that 63% of Chicagoans felt unsafe when Lightfoot was mayor.
