Both Taylor-Brown and Yee won medals in individual contests earlier in the week and brought back silver at women’s and men’s events, respectively.
Hong Kong’s rising star, Siobhan Bernadette, has withdrawn from the 50-meter freestyle semi-final at the Olympics due to a back injury.
The 23-year-old swimmer won the silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle on Friday and the silver medal in the 200 frees two days ago. This is the first swimming medal won by Hong Kong.
Her coach, Rick Bishop, said the injury first plagued her during the 100th free, but she continued. She finished 15th in 50 free qualifying rounds.
Hong Kong cheered her up and was excited to be the first to succeed in the Olympic pool. Her two silver medals are one of the six medals the country has won since her first appearance at the 1952 Summer Olympics.
The Nigerian sprinter Blessing Okagbare was temporarily suspended after a positive test for human growth hormone. She was scheduled to compete in the women’s 100-meter semifinals at the Olympic Games on Saturday.
The Athletics Integrity Unit said Okagbare tested positive on July 19th in an out-of-competition test. AIU states that Okagbare was only discovered on Friday after running in the 100-meter heat at the Tokyo Olympics.
