Olympic athletes and staff are COVID positive in Tokyo

Eight days before the opening ceremony on July 23, it was unclear if athletes needed to miss the event.

Tokyo, Japan — Olympic athletes and staff related to the Tokyo Olympics tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Japan, the organizers said Thursday.

The two unidentified persons were one of six new cases reported by the Tokyo Organizing Committee, including four contractors residing in Japan.

Athletes who tested positive on Wednesday went into quarantine for 14 days. Eight days before the opening ceremony on July 23, it was unclear if players would need to miss the event.

Staff classified as “game-related,” such as the International Olympic Committee, sports governing bodies, Olympic teams, sponsors, and official broadcast staff, were tested positive on Tuesday and have been quarantined for two weeks.

According to the organizers, there were a total of 26 COVID-19 infections among game participants and workers in Tokyo in six cases.

Tokyo officials also reported 1,308 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest total per day since January 21st. This was 26 consecutive days higher than a week ago.

The postponed Tokyo Olympics was declared a state of emergency one year after its original schedule.

The COVID-19 case organizer count does not include athletes and team officers who test positive in camps outside Japan.

The refugee team postponed arrival from Qatar’s pre-match camp after an unidentified member of the delegation was infected in an incident announced Wednesday. The IOC said the person had been single vaccinated, had no symptoms, and was quarantined by Qatari authorities.
