According to the Census, Texas is the fourth fastest growing state in the nation.

Austin (KXAN) — Texas population Over 30 million people last year, according to US Census Bureau estimates. The agency released population estimates for July 1, 2022 on Thursday.

But new data shows that growth isn’t feeling evenly across the state.

Population growth in 158 of Texas’ 254 counties After July 1, 2021, there was a population decline at 95. One county, San Saba, remained unchanged.

Kauffman County, southeast of Dallas, grew the fastest of any county in the state, with a population change of just under 9%. The county had her second fastest growth in the nation, behind Whitman County, Washington, which grew 10.1%.

Rockwall, Parker, Comal and Chambers counties all rank among the top 10 fastest growing counties in the nation, each growing by more than 5%. Hayes County also grew he more than 5%, well ahead of the statewide growth rate of 1.59%.

Loving county, west of Midland/Odessa, saw the fastest population decline, with a 10.5% decline from 57 to 51. The county remains the least populated in the country.

King and Borden counties near Lubbock each lost more than 5% of their population.

Looking at the raw numbers, 12 counties added over 10,000 residents between July 1, 2021 and July 1, 2022. Home to the state’s largest city, Houston, Harris County is leading the way with more than 45,000 new residents. Collin County, north of Dallas, was close behind with more than 44,000 new residents.

All 10 counties with the most new residents were in the Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio metropolitan areas.

Meanwhile, two counties lost more than 1,000 residents. Beaumont’s hometown of Jefferson County lost her 2,701 inhabitants, and Corpus his Christie’s home of Nueces County lost more than 1,500 of her inhabitants.

Migration accounted for most of the population growth in most of the state’s largest counties. For example, in Collin County, 86% of the increase was due to people moving into the county from elsewhere, and only 14% was due to natural change, or births within the county.

However, there are some notable exceptions. Both Dallas and El Paso counties experienced net migration losses. This means that both counties have seen an increase in total population, thanks to the number of births.

Counties within the KXAN Viewing Area

According to new estimates, the 15 counties in the KXAN viewing area will add more than 67,000 new residents between July 2021 and July 2022.

Hays County is the fastest growing county in the region with a 5.1% increase in population. Blanco County and Williamson County both saw him grow by more than 4%. Travis County’s population growth rate he slowed to 1.4%.

San Saba County is the only regional county that has not seen population growth, and the number of residents has not changed.

In terms of actual resident numbers, Williamson County added about 27,000 people, accounting for 40% of all increases in the region. Travis County added about 18,000 residents, and in Hayes County he added more than 13,000.

Much of the population growth in the Austin metropolitan area, which officially includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Hayes, Travis, and Williamson counties, continues to be driven by internal migration.

In Bastrop County, 91% of total population growth was due to people moving into the county from elsewhere. In Travis County, the increase is much more evenly split, with 53% due to migration and 47% due to natural change within the county.

Across metropolitan areas, 77% of population growth is due to migration.

Texas Ranking

Harris County is the largest in the state, accounting for 15.9% of Texas’ population, down slightly from 16.2% in the 2020 Census. Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, and Travis counties make up the remaining top five counties.

Southwest of Houston, Fort Bend County is the eighth-largest county in the state, up two spots from 2021. It overtook Hidalgo and El Paso counties in the process.

Hadspeth County, east of El Paso, rose the most from 217th to 212nd. The county added her 143 new residents, an increase of more than 4%.

Meanwhile, DeWitt and Hemphill counties both dropped four places. DeWitt is now her 124th largest county in Texas and Hemphill is her 218th largest county.

Loving County remains the smallest county in Texas, down from 63 in the 2020 Census to just 51.

The national population in July 2022 is estimated at 336,509,346, an increase of over 1.2 million compared to 2021. Nationally, the population he increased by 0.36%.

In total, 32 states and the District of Columbia increased in population and 18 states and Puerto Rico decreased in population.

Looking at percentage changes, Texas is the fourth fastest growing state, with a 1.6% increase in population between 2021 and 2022.

Florida’s population grew 1.9%, while Idaho and South Carolina saw population growth of 1.8% and 1.7% respectively.

Puerto Rico had the largest population decline, with a 1.3% decline between 2021 and 2022. New York, Illinois, and Louisiana all saw their populations decline by more than 0.8%.
