Sweet said the settlement secures the future of her daughters, who are now 13 and 10.

But she added that it also equates to “a certain amount of accountability and justice.”

“What we want to see is justice at the federal level where the Department of Justice releases federal charges,” she said.

Sweet was torn about the settlement because she wanted to see it until trial to get more evidence that could help in a federal lawsuit.

She also wanted to continue fighting for other victims of police brutality, she said.

But for the physical and mental health of her and her children, she said it was time to end this fight.

“This is the highest verdict for any deceased victim in Arizona and sets Arizona’s bar higher for future victims. It will continue to happen,” she said.

Sweet said she knew what she lost because her oldest daughter has memories of her father.

But their second daughter is not.

Court proceedings claim their lives, and Sweet doesn’t want it to be the only context they hear about their father.

So she works every day to humanize him.

“Danny was generous,” she said.
