Nonprofit needs more donated wreaths for graves at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

San Antonio – The nonprofit that puts wreaths on graves at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery has run out of donations, and as a result many people won’t be able to get their hands on wreaths this holiday season.

David Bolser, CEO of the nonprofit Senior Veterans, Inc., said about 80% of the graves will not receive wreaths due to insufficient donations.

“More than 167,000 veterans are buried in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, one of the largest national cemeteries in the United States. but we haven’t had enough wreaths for all the headstones in the past few years,” Bolser said. “Only a few graves receive wreaths. People can change that.”

The wreath campaign originally started on Veterans Day, but the deadline for donations is Wednesday, November 30th.

“People lay wreaths on gravestones and read aloud the names inscribed on each grave. Finally, they turned to the gravestones and saluted. It’s incredibly moving to see Americans honoring these veterans with their final resting place,” Bolser said.

The wreath will be installed on December 17, according to the nonprofit. This event is open to the public.

The wreath remains on the gravestone until early January.
