The smartphone market is beginning to feel redundant and crowded as more smartphone makers continue to see 5G devices pushed into the midrange and entry-level categories. Most smartphones have similar features, designs, and features, and the biggest distinguishing factor is the brand name on the back.
But Nokia’s latest smartphones add a new twist. It is designed to be beaten and continue to function. The XR20 has MIL-STD-810H and IP68 ratings. Military standards mean that the phone can withstand extreme weather temperatures and conditions, and extreme drop tests, among other environmental conditions. The IP68 rating for dust and water resistance indicates that the XR20 will survive up to 30 minutes in 1.5 m of water.
However, Nokia not only struck the rugged look of the XR20, but also had some attractive features. There are two rear cameras, one is a 48 megapixel camera and the other is an ultra wide 13 megapixel camera.
And of course, you can also connect to 5G networks. It will go on sale in the US for $ 549 through Nokia on August 24th.
Here’s a breakdown of the spec and what’s available for $ 549:
- operating system: Android 11 with 4 years security update

Some details about the XR20 stand out to me. Nokia promises a four-year security update for the XR20. Most Android makers will stop offering security updates after a few years. Keeping security updates flowing to the XR20 sends a message to the fleet manager that the deployed device is theoretically safe and up-to-date.
The second detail is that the XR20’s display will probably continue to work, whether you’re wearing gloves or your hands are wet. Both situations are difficult for a standard smartphone.
There is nothing special or noteworthy about the Nokia XR20 design. It looks like a standard 2021 Android smartphone, but sometimes it has to withstand dropping, kicking and throwing.
Again, it will go on sale August 24th for $ 549 and will be available in Ultra Blue or Granite.
