The men in the KSAT newsroom are in a hairy situation. no shave november Since it’s back, so is the beard.

no shave november It has become an annual event all over the country. It’s time for the man to put down his razor blade and let his facial hair stand for his 30 days. But it’s not just an excuse to stop shaving, there’s a special reason for it.

This is part of our ongoing commitment to cancer research, treatment and prevention.

The fundraiser began in 2009 when the Chicago Hill family lost their father, Matthew Hill, to colon cancer. His children started his Facebook group in November to help raise funds. Since then, missions have spread across the country.

Last year, 15 people from the KSAT Newsroom participated in the fundraiser. Each member shares a story about how cancer has affected their lives, making the campaign more personal.

Team KSAT raised over $20,000 Thanks to the community’s help, the team hopes to exceed that goal this year.

there will be 13 Cancer Foundation You will benefit from this year’s fundraiser. Sarah Svendsen is Executive Director of the Matthew Hill Foundation. She said that since the nonprofit’s founding, more organizations have benefited through fundraising.

“Over the past two years, we’ve really broadened our horizons because different causes mean a lot to different people. Some are lobbying for better research funding at the Capitol.” We have other people helping our patients and we’re grounded,” she said.

Svendsen believes that every penny counts in the fight against cancer.

See the comments below for the motivations of some of the participants.

  • Mark Austin – “No Shave November in memory of 1SG David Larson. Having survived an ambush, a shootout, an IED explosion, and was diagnosed with colon cancer, after 26 years of military service and lengthy treatment here in San Antonio, he lost that battle in 2019. He lost that battle to his wife, Simone. and daughter Charlotte.I am doing this for all three of them.I have never met Dave in person but my respect for this soldier, son, husband and father It couldn’t be more profound. His life mattered.”
  • John Paul Barajas – “My grandfather always said that it’s nice to be kind! And that’s the word I try to live by. Doing the right thing or doing a kind deed always makes me feel better.” Holding my razor for a month in hopes of raising money to beat cancer is the least I can do.
  • Bellmare of Asia – “This is my second time participating in No-Shave November. Normally I don’t do it for selfish reasons. I don’t like having a beard. Growing a beard for a month is nothing compared to someone who has to go through weeks of cancer treatment.Working with people diagnosed with cancer every day to find a cure. Join me in a fundraiser to show your support for people.”
  • Stephen Cabazos – “No Shave November is not just about how much you can grow, but how much you can give. We all know someone who has been affected by this disease, so let’s be as open minded and open our pocketbooks as we can.”
  • Dillon Collier – “Everyone I know is affected by cancer and its many forms. My father and grandfather are my loved ones who died from this terrible disease. No Shave November , an annual opportunity to use television platforms to spotlight this fight and raise funds for continued efforts to fight cancer, with KSAT playing a key role in this effort nationwide. I feel awe and a great sense of pride when I see them fulfilling the mission.”
  • Jonathan Cotto -“As so many of you know who have lost someone or are currently battling cancer, I am committed to raising awareness as well as promoting prevention, research and the discovery of cures. I hope that I can contribute a grain of sand.
  • Justin Horn -“No Shave November has grown into something big here at KSAT. I couldn’t be happier. We grow beards and people notice. That’s exactly what we want. People look at the beard and ask about it or remind them that it’s time to donate to a good cause. It’s something that has affected us all. My grandfather died of cancer and my mother had cancer. And I know there are so many families suffering from cancer right now. We would like to help by raising as much funding as possible for research. Last year, a KSAT member raised nearly $10,000 for him. We aim to go even higher this year. Please support and donate our beards if you like!”
  • Ken Heuser -“I am participating in this challenge in honor of my mother, who passed away five years ago in mid-November, my wife’s aunt, and two uncles who passed away from cancer. I hope the money I raise as a group will help Dr. Find a cure for this disease. “
  • RJ Marquez“I am very honored to be part of the 2022 KSAT No Shave November Crew. My Uncle Gerald “Guerra” Garcia passed away in 2013. He was the husband of my Aunt Gloria and essentially another daughter to my mother and her brothers. He loved soccer (!) and everyone still misses him, and about the loss of his wonderful Wisdom parents, Diana and Richard, and their son Bryce. I think Bryce’s fight and spirit have been a great inspiration to the entire San Antonio community and beyond. ”
  • Max Massey – “I can’t think of a better platform to raise awareness and raise funds to fight cancer. I have friends and family who have had cancer, passed away, or are battling cancer. It’s not just one month to avoid shaving, it’s how your social media audience and friends see a huge difference between your usual year-round look and this month’s look. We raised a lot last year and exceeded our goals, but this year we hope to raise even more, fund more research, and help more families in our communities and across the country. hoping.”
  • Mario Orellana – “Like most people, cancer has taken a toll on my family and friends. We are honored to be able to save lives and are asking for your support to support the National LGBT Cancer Network, which helps educate the LGBTQI community about the increased risk of cancer and the importance of early detection. Our mission is to create a world where all cancer patients are treated with dignity.”

  • Mike Osterhage – “Men aren’t always comfortable when it comes to health issues. I hope that talking about reasons not to shave and men’s health will make them feel more comfortable discussing them.”
  • Steve Sprister -“Put the razor away in November. I grow a beard every year in memory of my uncle Terry, who died of cancer at a young age. By the time I found out he had colon cancer, it was too late. The beard also reminds me and all men that we need to take care of ourselves and get regular check-ups. Please join me and my KSAT Beard Brothers in his fundraiser during No Shave November. “
