No.18 Tennessee Rolls Over East Tennessee Street 94-62

Knoxville, Tennessee. – Olivier Nkamhoua scored the highest 23 points in his career, and Kennedy Chandler added 16 on Sunday as No. 18 Tennessee defeated 94-62 in East Tennessee.

Nkamhoua, a 6-foot-8 junior, shot 14-9 and also recorded 8 rebounds with a volunteer (2-0).

“I play my game more confidently,” said Nkamhoua. “Learning which shots to take is part of my growth here.”

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said: He is not close to scratching the surface of where he is. “

Desmond Oliver, the first-year head coach of East Tennessee, who was a Vols assistant for six years, was proud of Nkamhoua’s development.

“Burns is in top condition with a veteran,” Oliver said. “When you get juniors and seniors in the program, you can see them really improve. Adding Kennedy with him makes it hard to stop him.”

Impressive freshman Chandler from day one of the season, Tennessee led 46-23, scoring all points in the first half. He added 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

“Kennedy Chandler is the best point guard I’ve seen at (Thompson-Bowling Arena),” Oliver said. “He reminds me of young Kyrie Irving.

“My idea as a person is I’m against you. (Preparing) I don’t think he’s great. Then I sit there and he hits 3 seconds and drops a dime. I’m watching … Wow! Give a name to a better point guard. “

John Fullcarson scored 10 rebounds with 6 points in his first action of the season. Justin Powell had 11 points.

Jordan King scored 15 out of 20 points in the second half of the Buccaneers (0-2). David Sloan added 12 points and Redarius Brewer scored 11 points.

“Our front line was kicked in the ass,” Oliver said. “But that’s a pretty good team we played.”

Big picture

Eastern Tennessee: Bucks hasn’t beat the ranked team since March 20, 1992, when he won 10th place in Arizona in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Tennessee: Bringing Full Carson back to the floor was a big step in the right direction for Vols. The senior big man broke his left thumb and missed the team’s exhibition and opening round. The challenge is to put him in the form of basketball in time for the next weekend’s showdown.

“We wanted the full key to be a game,” Burns said. “We may have left him there a little longer than usual. I once asked him to come out. I need to prepare him.”

East Tennessee: After opening the season with two road losses (Apalachia and Tennessee), Bucks will face USC Upstate on Thursday night.

Tennessee: After a week’s vacation, a trip to Mohegan Sun Resort in Uncasville, Connecticut will take place for the 2021 Basketball Hall of Fame. On Saturday, Tennessee will take on the 4th Villanova. Then, depending on Saturday’s results, Tennessee will meet either the 7th Padu or the 19th North Carolina on Sunday.
