The 23-year-old rookie gave up 4 hits and walked 2 while hitting 3. He defeated Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto, stranded two runners in third place. Mueller got defensive help from Austin Riley for the fifth time when third baseman snareed Alonso’s high chopper and started a double play at the end of the inning.
Tyler Matzek threw the perfect sixth place to the Braves. Will Smith allowed Tomas Nido a one-time single before James McCann double-played to win his 20th save.
Mueller also helped Atlanta win the first run by single-offing Marcus Stroman (7-9) in the third inning for his first major league hit. Joc Pederson followed with a double RBI. Marcus Stroman allowed eight hits with four strikeouts in five innings and two runs in one walk.
Dansby Swanson led the double in fourth place. His shot from the center fielder was initially judged to be Homer. Kevin Pillar threw the ball into the infield and Swanson was tagged as shortstop Jonathan Villar. Crew Chief Doug Edings rejected and awarded Swanson’s second baseman.
Stephen Vogt followed in a single and Swanson scored when Orlando Arcia defeated the back end of a potential double play grounder.
Freddie Freeman and Guillermo Heredia each hit the Braves twice.
Biller went through one and two walks for Mets and reached the base in all three at-bats.
Mueller and Straumann helped their own cause third. With Heredia second after the lead-off double, Mueller was pulled back after showing a bunt and hit the drawn infield to achieve a milestone hit. Marcus Stroman went down the third base line to lead the bottom half with a well-placed bunt single.
The two starting pitchers have hit in the same game for three consecutive days. Lance Lynn and Brandon Woodruff did so on Sunday for the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers. Merrill Kelly and Alec Mills doubled on Saturday at Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs, respectively.
