Moderna: COVID-19 Shot works with a 12 year old kid

Moderna says the vaccine caused children the same signs of immune protection as adults and the same mild, temporary side effects.

Washington — Moderna announced on Tuesday that the COVID-19 vaccine will provide strong protection for children up to the age of 12. This is a potentially second choice for that age group in the United States.

Global vaccine supply remains tight, and much of the world is struggling to vaccinate adults to end a pandemic. But earlier this month, the United States and Canada approved another vaccine (a shot by Pfizer and BioNTech) from the age of twelve.

Moderna says it will submit teenage data to the US Food and Drug Administration and other global regulators early next month, aiming to take it to the next level.

The company has studied more than 3,700 people between the ages of 12 and 17. Preliminary findings show that the vaccine caused signs of immune protection in children, just like adults, and caused the same kind of temporary side effects such as arm pain, headache, and malaise.

There was no COVID-19 diagnosis in those given two doses of Moderna vaccine, compared to the four cases among children given dummy shots. In a press release, the company also stated that the vaccine appeared to be 93% effective two weeks after the first dose.

Children are much less likely to be aggravated by COVID-19 than adults, but account for about 14% of coronavirus cases in the United States. At least 316 people have died in the United States alone, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Due to the abundance of vaccines in the United States, a few days after the FDA released Pfizer, young teens gathered to receive Pfizer injections. This is part of an effort to vaccinate as many children as possible by the next school year.

Both Pfizer and Moderna have begun testing younger children from the age of 11 to 6 months of age. This test is more complicated. Teens receive the same doses as adults, but researchers are testing lower doses in smaller children. Experts want to see some results in the fall.
