MLS Discovers Inter Miami Breaks Budget Rules with Blaze Matudi’s Signature | Inter Miami

David Beckham’s Inter Miami has been found by Major League Soccer to violate league budget rules in a contract with French midfielder Blaze Matudi. The MLS said in a statement Friday that the final results of the investigation, including possible sanctions, would be announced “in the near future.”

The league concluded that Matudi, who joined the team from Juventus last August, “should have been classified as a designated player” for the 2020 season for salary.

Each MLS franchise allows up to three high-value players, whose wages do not count towards the salary cap. The ruling means that Inter Miami had four people: Matuidi, Gonzalo Higuain, Rodolfo Pizarro of Mexico, and Matias Pellegrini of Argentina.

Inter Miami has acquired Pellegrini’s contract to regain compliance. The midfielder has been rented to Fort Lauderdale, an affiliate team playing in the second tier of the USL. Pellegrini is not eligible to play in Miami this season.

When Matuidi joined Miami, the team said it used a Target Allocation (TAM). However, MLS said, “Matuidi’s rewards have exceeded the limits of TAM players and he should have been classified as a designated player. As a result, in 2020 the team had three designated players in addition to Matuidi. As a result, Inter Miami violated the restrictions on designated players. “

“We have reached an agreement in collaboration with Matthias, his representative and MLS. At this point, we believe this is the best option for all parties,” said Miami sports director Chris Henderson. Stated in a statement. “Mattias is a talented young player and has an exciting career ahead. He remains in the organization while we are working on finding opportunities in the field and the next steps for him. . “

Former England captain Beckham is a co-owner of Miami and president of the football business. Ironically, the transfer to the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007 introduced a designated player. This is informally known as the “Beckham Rule”.

Inter Miami will start their MLS2021 season under the new head coach Phil Neville against the Galaxy on Sunday. In their debut season, they finished 10th at the Eastern Conference before losing to Nashville in the first round of the playoffs.
