The Seattle Mariners continued to dominate the Oakland Athletics they visited on Monday night, riding a pair of Mitch Haniger’s three-run home runs to beat American League West rivals 13-4 in a three-game series opener.
Seattle chased the second AL wildcard and moved within 1 1/2 games of Boston, while pulling within 4 1/2 games of the Houston Astros, the number one in the American League West. A is behind the Red Sox by 3 1/2 games in the wildcard race.
Ty France finished 4-4 in Seattle with 4 RBIs and 3 runs. Chris Flexen (14-6) won, threw 5 innings and allowed 4 runs and 7 hits. He walked one and hit six.
Seth Brown hit A’s three-run home run. Cole Irvin (10-15) hit 5 runs with 6 hits in 3 innings.
White Sox 8, Tigers 7
Caesar Hernandez and Zach Collins drove two runs each during the six-run and four-inning explosions and visited Edge Detroit in Chicago after the bench-clearing incident in the final inning.
Nine shifts took place after Chicago’s José Abreu and Detroit shortstop Niko Goodrum exchanged words after Abreu was thrown out trying to move forward at a low pitch. After the Tigers Isaac Paredes hit the pitch, Abreu hit Alex Lange’s pitch early in the innings.
Eloy Jimenez recorded three hits on the White Sox, including a two-run home run. Yasmani Grandal added a solo shot to the composition of the game that was postponed last Wednesday. Jonathan Scoop scored two hits, including Solo Homer, and ran two runs at the Detroit home finale.
Reds 13, Pirates 1
Nicholas Castellanos returned home to emphasize his five-run performance, and Joey Votto belted a two-run shot to win host Cincinnati over Pittsburgh.
Castellanos hit three runs in the sixth inning on his 33rd home run this season, and went deep into the Reds’ four consecutive games with 17 hits. Rookie Jonathan India belted a two-run home run to highlight the four-hit performance of his first career. Eugenio Suarez made a solo shot in his three hits.
The attack was more than enough for river San Martin (1-0), who made his major league debut after being recalled from Triple A Louisville. The 25-year-old left-handed allowed one run with five hits while hitting five in 5 2/3 innings. Anthony Alford scored two hits and won a Pirates run against Cincinnati 4-12 this season.
Indian 8, Royals 3
Amed Rosario won 4-5 with 3 RBIs as Cleveland was defeated by visiting Kansas City in a make-up game from the rainout on Wednesday.
Indians finished the home part of their schedule at 40-41. The top two batters in the lineup, Myles Straw and Rosario, achieved four runs 6-10. Bradley Zimmer added a home run from his brother Royals Relief Kyle Zimmer.
This was the last away contest for the Royals, who finished 20-15 before the break after the 15-31 road record after the All-Star break. Kansas City’s Salvador Perez drove two runs, 2-4, raising the total to 117 RBIs, leading the major leagues.
Nationals 5, Rockies 4
Escobar scored three hits and RBIs as Washington defeated Colorado in Denver for three consecutive games.
Josiah Gray (2-2) won with 5 1/3 innings and Tanner Rainey won his third save. Lane Thomas and Luis Garcia each provided Washington with two hits.
Ryan McMahon hit a three-run double, Elias Diaz and CJ Cron scored two hits each on the Rockies, losing five consecutive losses and eleven ten. ..
