“Obviously every strike is one less ball in play, so the chances are better to succeed,” Verlander said. “I’ve never been looking for hits. They just happen. It was a pleasure to see some of the adjustments I made, I think they moved on to my start, and I was able to have a little more swing stuff and lose.”
Verlander was marked for six runs and four homers in his last outing against the Mariners on May 27th.
“I think it was more execution than nothing,” Verlander said. “I’ve been running a bit of a lot of launches recently. Particularly the last time I played these guys took advantage of some of those mistakes. Today I was able to better locate all my stuff and make some adjustments between the mechanical starts to be a little more consistent, and I felt it was able to do it “.
The right-hander now has 3,086 strikeouts in a row, beating Max Scherzer (3,079) and John Smoltz (3,084) for 17th place.

“He just has this extra equipment that not many pitchers have,” Espada said. “He gets in trouble and knows how to use his weapons. He knows when to turn around and throw shots. That’s a gift that not many pitchers have. Today he showed that again.”
Rafael Montero walked through the bases loaded with an out in the eighth but caused a double play of end of entry of Abraham Toro.
Ryan Pressly threw the ninth for his eleventh save.
Alvarez hit his No. 17 home run in the eighth, only overtaking Taylor Trammell’s right field goal and stretched glove to extend Houston’s lead to three.
After Toro gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a power-driven field, the Astros responded with individual drives from Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Peña at the bottom.
“We had some traffic,” Seattle director Scott Servais said. “We had some chances. Tonight was the best: we needed that great success. Certainly, in the eighth inning there, I thought we had a very good shot against Montero to at least tie the game, but he didn’t find a place.”
Chris Flexen (2-7) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Flexen, who fell 1-3 against Houston this season, allowed three runs or less in each of his four outings against the Astros.
“I thought Flex did a great job,” Servais said. “He kept them unbalanced all night. He had that little inconvenience where he gave up a couple of runs at the start of the game, but Verlander was on top of his game. He certainly made quite a few adjustments since the last time we faced him, which we expected That’s why he’s one of the best pitchers in the game. “
Sailors: 1B Evan White (sports hernia) was withdrawn from his rehabilitation job after aggravating his groin or hip problem that was causing the discomfort. … DE Kyle Lewis (concussion) started cardiovascular activities but not yet baseball activities, Servais said.
