The world’s highest-paid jockey boasts a record £30m in prize money this year, but holds just a fraction of it

The highest-earning jockey in the world has set a new record for cash earned in a season, but he earns very little.

Irad Ortiz Jr’s rides have earned a whopping £30.3m on US racetracks this season.

This is a single-season record for a US rider, surpassing Ortiz’s own £29.9m in 2019.

But it was the horse owners who benefited most from his success on the track.

Jockeys only keep a portion of the race winnings. This ranges from about 7% to 10%.

Still, Ortiz’s bank manager would almost certainly be content with his earnings with only nearly £3 million in earnings.

This is apart from all normal riding fees and any retainers he has with his owner and trainer.

Some of Oritz’s biggest wins came at the Breeders’ Cup last weekend.

The win for the William Mott-trained elite power in the sprint was worth £770,000.

Goodnight Olive’s Filly & Mare Sprint win was worth £385,000 and Foret’s Juvenile victory was worth a further £777,000.

From those three rides alone, Ortiz could have made as much as £200,000 for just a few minutes of work.

However, you’ll want to forget the Turf Sprint favourite, the Golden Pal flop, entirely.

For comparison, British champion rider William Buick has earned just under £6 million this season, according to the Professional Jockey Association.

After beating his own big winner at the Breeders’ Cup in the United States, Godolphin earned £5,943,784 domestically.

However, his global tally is much higher and, when all rides are taken into account, could match Ortiz’s £30million.

Japan’s Yutaka Take is considered the highest-paid jockey in the world.

of The 53-year-old veteran is believed to have earned around £600m For different owners and trainers who have been in the saddle for decades.
