Microsoft said Tuesday that the board had approved the appointment of president Brad Smith as vice chairman. The move takes place months after Satya Nadella took on the role of chairman after joining the board of directors when she replaced Steve Ballmer as CEO in 2014.

This appointment follows a quarter-century contribution to software and hardware manufacturers, including addressing antitrust concerns from regulators.

“This reflects Brad’s unique leadership role for the company, the board, and myself, as well as the government and other external stakeholders around the world,” Nadella said in a statement. Said.

Smith, 62, is Microsoft’s top lawyer and regularly represents software companies in policy discussions. According to a biography on Microsoft’s website, he is one of Microsoft’s top executives, leading more than 1,500 legal and corporate operations in 54 countries.

Microsoft acknowledged his commitment to sustainability, responsible artificial intelligence, external Covid-19 efforts, and employee diversity in fiscal year 2020 in its latest mandate. According to FactSet, Smith owns about 732,000 shares of Microsoft, which is worth about $ 217 million.

He joined Microsoft from the law firm Covington & Burling in 1993, runs Microsoft’s corporate and legal affairs in Europe, and became Microsoft’s legal counsel in 2002. According to the biography, he was responsible for resolving antitrust cases over the next decade.

Smith became president of Microsoft and joined Netflix’s board of directors in 2015. He, along with Carol Enbrown, is the author of the 2019 book Tools and Weapons: Promises and Dangers in the Digital Age, which discusses privacy and security.

Smith will continue to report to Nadella, Microsoft said.
