TOKYO-US chip supplier Micron Technology Inc plans to invest 800 billion yen ($ 690 million) to build a new plant in Hiroshima, western Japan, the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reported Wednesday. ..
Micron’s factory is likely to specialize in DRAM memory chips that are widely used in data centers and is expected to go live by 2024, he said.
The report comes from strong demand from automakers and tech companies, which contributes to a serious global chip shortage. Taiwanese chip giant TSMC announced plans to build a factory in Japan last week, and media reports indicate that the Japanese government is ready to help pay for its investment.
