Meta, TikTok could face liability for child addiction in California

SACRAMEDO – Social media giants like Facebook parent Post Platforms Inc. could be sued by government attorneys in California for features allegedly harming children due to addiction, under a bill that will pass the state first, which faces a landslide vote in the state Senate here Tuesday.

The measure will allow the attorney general, local attorneys and city attorneys of California’s four largest cities to sue social networking companies, including Meta — which also owns Instagram — and TikTok, which owns the Chinese company. Bytedance Ltd., and Break under the law of the State governing unfair business practices. The bill would allow lawsuits if a prosecutor believes a company was using features they knew or should have known they would be addicted to minors.
