Meta, TikTok could face civil liability for child addiction in California

SACRAMENTA, CA – social media companies such as the parent company Facebook Meta-platforms California government attorneys may sue for functions that allegedly harm children through addiction under the nation’s first bill that allowed a casting vote in the state Senate late Tuesday.

The measure will allow the state attorney general, local district attorneys and city attorneys of California’s four largest cities to sue social media companies, including Meta, which also owns Instagram, as well as TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance Ltd., and Binding under state law governing unscrupulous business practices. The bill would allow a lawsuit to be filed if a prosecutor believes the company used functions it knew or should have known would depend on minors.
