Met Gala 2022: Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda as hosts

We are one month and changing from the first Monday in May and the Met Gala is back on its usual schedule. On May 2nd, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art presents itself In America: An Anthology of Fashionthe second chapter of his two-part exhibition on American fashion, which follows on from last year’s In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. This year’s theme New York Times Fashion Director Vanessa Friedman shared on Twitteris Gilded shine.

The event’s co-chairs are actress and filmmaker Regina King, actress Blake Lively, actor and Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds, and actor and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda. (This year’s co-chair foursome is a bit different from last Gala’s Gen Z contingent, which included actor Timothée Chalamet, singer Billie Eilish, tennis star Naomi Osaka, and poet Amanda Gorman.) American designer Tom Ford , Instagram boss Adam Mosseri, and Fashion Editor Anna Wintour will continue in her roles as honorary co-chair of the gala; Ford and King are among a group of filmmakers that also includes Sofia Coppola and Chloé Zhao who created cinematic vignettes for the exhibition.

And for some historical context on the topic: Gilded shine is an allusion to America’s Gilded Age, the time of rapid industrialization and massive economic growth in the roughly three decades before the turn of the century. This era also saw the end of Reconstruction in 1877, which barred many black Americans from participating in or benefiting from the economic boom. (The era takes its name from the 1873 novel by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner The Gilded Age: A History of Todaya satire on post-Civil War America and its nascent industrial class.)

In return, An anthology of fashion will focus on the workers of this era and highlight individual designers and seamstresses who worked in the United States from the 19th century to the mid-late 20th century. Given the subject matter, there’s a good chance the ensembles will be even more glitzy or political, or both, than usual.

The new exhibition includes a series of installations in the historic rooms of the museum’s American wing and both A dictionary and An anthology will be on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan through September 5.
