Merkel urges Germans to accept “strict” virus restrictions

Berlin – Prime Minister Angela Merkel urged Germans to accept the national pandemic restrictions that came into effect at midnight. As a result, a curfew from 10 pm to 5 am was applied, further restricting personal contact and access to unwanted stores in highly infected areas.

In a weekly video address on Saturday, Merkel admitted that the new rules were “strict” but argued that they were needed to curb the spread of the virus in the country.

On Friday, the German Disease Control Agency reported 23,392 newly confirmed cases and 286 deaths from COVID-19. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Germany has recorded approximately 3.3 million cases and 81,444 deaths.

Chancellor Merkel said new measures were “urgently needed” to be implemented automatically in areas with more than 100 new cases per week for every 100,000 inhabitants.

Citing other countries such as the United Kingdom, Portugal and Ireland, where infection rates plummeted during the strict blockade, she defended Germany’s new restrictions on critics who over-called them.

“Countries that broke the third wave of the pandemic and then relaxed again did so without strict measures such as a curfew,” Merkel said.

This week, dozens of German celebrities posted a video mocking the limits. Since then, some people have deleted their videos, echoed the far-right story about the pandemic, and apologized for appearing to downplay the suffering of those who lost their loved ones on COVID-19. Did.

This week, German parliamentarians approved legislation that consistently applies “emergency braking” to high-incidence areas and abolished the patchwork of measures that characterize pandemic responses across the country’s 16 states.
